Technological advances are shrinking distances

07 Sep

Technological advancements are shrinking distances and removing barriers to communication and knowledge sharing. Information gathering and dissemination today is easy and convenient. There is no wonder in that agriculture has also begun to reap the benefits of e-technology. Having understood the immense potential that e-technology can play in dissemination of agricultural technologies and facilitating adoption of innovations, various internet and technology based facilities are made available for the farming community.
This facility acts as an information hub for storing and disseminating information on agriculture and also provides online and offline guidance to the farmers. This has closed the gap between the developers and users of agricultural technologies. The internet provides information on appropriate seedlings and farming methods for different farm areas, information on latest technologies that can be adopted etc. Creating awareness and exposure to new technologies in regional languages is a prerequisite for adoption of innovations. Pages containing success stories of farmers and rate and availability of planting materials are the other attractions for farmers, who use the internet. The price forecast for various crops can be learnt in advance through the internet. Information on various developmental schemes for farmers is also available on the internet.

Argentina’s push for biofuels

02 Sep

An argentine company has opened the country’s first factory to make biodiesel from algae. They hope to use pond scum as a replacement for soy in making biodiesel as a part to push for renewable energy. Argentina is the world’s top exporter of soyoil, but using the edible oil to make fuel is controversial because it cuts into food supplies. Oil extracted from algae is also seen as an attractive alternative to soyoil and other vegetable oils because it does not use land that could be used for food crops and can absorb carbon dioxide from power plants or factories. The oil extraction process also produces a protein rich paste, which is edible.
“We are not competing with the food supply but generating food, at a low cost and helping the environment because algae grow fast and trap carbon dioxide,” said Jorge Kaloustian, President of Oilfox S.A., the company that owns the plant northeast of Buenos Aires. Some researchers say algae-based fuel would be too costly to produce commercially, but plants that use algae oil have sprouted everywhere, from Australia to China as companies bet on growing demand for renewable fuels.

LED lamps

02 Sep

Human life was changed for the better with the invention of bulbs. As technology advanced, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were introduced. They became very popular in the recent past as it has many advantages over the normal bulb. The bulbs have not yet been fully replaced by the CFLs but now the latest technology has introduced the light-emitting diode (LED) lamps. LEDs have already been used in the back-lights of vehicles, the flood lights, billboards, the numbers on digital clocks, and they transmit information from remote controls and light up laptops. They are used in appliances to blink when on standby, indicating power supply.
Technology has advanced rapidly since the invention of the tiny low-power LED lamps that blink feebly from television sets and other electronic devices, indicating power supply. LEDs make up tiny lamps that fit easily into an electronic circuit, they do not have filaments that heat up and glow as in ordinary bulbs. So they stay at normal temperature, whereas the bulbs heat up. The latest high power LED lamps use cutting-edge technology, much brighter and more efficient than their predecessors. They offer a alternative to domestic and commercial incandescent bulbs. A range of LED lights for various purposes are in the market, with their prices steadily going down and their efficiency and durability improving.

A revolution in food production

29 Aug

British scientists have decoded the genetic sequence of wheat and this is the most significant breakthrough in agricultural science since the “Green Revolution.” This will help to grow faster and disease resistant crops which will help to meet the growing world food shortage. This will lead to greater food security and lower food prices. The farmers are expected to start producing higher yields of disease resistant crops within five years.
The researchers are now working to analyse the sequence to highlight natural genetic variation between wheat types, which will help significantly speed up current breeding programmes. Scientists also said that it would now be possible to identify genes which controlled important agricultural characteristics. Using the new DNA data they will be able to identify variation in gene networks involved in important agricultural traits such as disease resistance, drought tolerance and yield. A version of the data will be placed online so that farmers around the world could have immediate access to it. And it will help to accelerate the speed and accuracy of plant-breeding. While the genomes of rice and maize had already been sequenced, contributing to vastly improved breeding, wheat had so far proved harder to sequence because its genome was vast and highly complex. The new advance would help to produce crops that could thrive in challenging conditions at a time when the world was facing the prospect of food shortages.

Stem cells

29 Aug

Since the beginning stem cells have been under a lot of controversy. Stem cells are cells taken from human embryos just a few days after fertilisation. They can be turned into any of the body’s 200 mature cell types. They can also be used to study and treat diseases. The stem cells originate from the embryos and in order to acquire them the embryos have to be destroyed. The scientists wondered if they can create embryonic stem cells without the embryos. Scientists discovered that all they had to do was add four genes and a cell would reprogramme itself back to its original state when it was a stem cell, that reprogrammed cell seemed to be able to turn into many kinds of specialised cells in the body, an ability called pluripotent.
Researchers are trying to find out whether stem cells made by this reprogramming process are really the same as ones taken from embryos. But they found small differences and they need embryonic stem cells as a basis of comparison. So it is not very safe and effective to use these pluripotent cells. They tended to remember their tissue of origin, so researchers have to find ways to make the cells forget where they came from. So for all this study and comparison they need human embryonic stem cells.

A new solar system found

29 Aug

Astronomers have discovered what they claim is a vast solar system of seven planets, orbiting a sun-like star, 127 light years away from Earth. An international team has confirmed the presence of the five planets and have tantalising evidence of two more in the planetary system which is believed to be the largest ever detected beyond the sun. The distance of the planets from their parent star follow a regular pattern, similar to that seen in our own solar system.
The astronomers have said “We have found what is most likely the system with the most planets yet discovered. This remarkable discovery also highlights the fact that we are now entering a new era in exoplanet research: the study of complex planetary systems and not just of individual planets. Studies of planetary motions in the new system reveal complex gravitational interactions between the planets and give us insights into the long- term evolution of the system.”
The parent star known as HD 10180, lies in the southern constellation of Hydrus 127 light years away. The astronomers patiently studied it for six years using a planet finding instrument called the HARPS spectrograph.

China plans to boost up air and rail network

29 Aug

The Chinese government is planning to pour billions of dollars to develop its air and rail network. This will help in enhancing the Army’s mobilisation to bring troops to remote areas. The completed project will include 8,000 km of railway lines and seven new airports, which will help in further widening of the asymmetry in border infrastructure between China and India.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was close to finishing work on its plan to build a “digital great wall” along the borders in Tibet and Xinjiang. The digital wall is a network of fibre optics which will improve the PLA’s command control structure and communication. With the setting up of a new sentry post in Medog County, the infrastructure for the nationwide surveillance system had been put in place.
The new railway network will serve the dual purpose of enhancing troop mobility both to border areas and also within Xinjiang, to increase response times to any unrest. The travelling time will also be reduced by these new rail lines and airports. Much of the PLA’s focus is in increasing coordination and mobility between the country’s seven military regions, which was found to be lacking both during the 2008 unrest in Tibet and also in responding to the earthquake in Sichuan the same year.

Children’s costumes

28 Aug

Popeye is the hero for most of the children watching the Popeye shows. Children are so fascinated by the Popeye character that my son wanted to dress like Popeye for the fancy dress show in his school. Popeye Costumes are available in the stores with all the necessary accessories. There is no need to go in search of all the accessories needed, everything is available as a set. The costumes make the children look like the real character. My son was so fascinated by the dress that he refused to take off the dress even after the show and wanted to sleep in it. He also started eating spinach as he wanted to be strong like Popeye. He imagines himself to be Popeye and wants to save Olive. As the Popeye character is quiet harmless we let him live in his imaginary world as long as he is playing. He jumps from chairs and tables shouting like Popeye. He imagines the other characters and talks with them tirelessly. Children once if they like a character it is difficult to change them. So we let him live like Popeye and this will continue only till he finds another character that fascinates him.
